How to Maintain a Long-Lasting Change

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

Discipline is the difference between what you want now and what you want most.

It got me thinking...

I can't help but think about the importance of discipline in maintaining long-lasting change. It's not always easy, but it's essential if we want to achieve our goals and desires. It's easy to get caught up in the instant gratification of our desires, but true fulfillment comes from working towards our long-term goals. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is lasting change.

Making a change in your life can be challenging, but maintaining that change over the long term can be even harder. Whether you're trying to change your diet, exercise habits, or anything else, here are a few tips to help you maintain your progress:

  1. Start small: Making big changes all at once can be overwhelming. Instead, start with small, manageable steps that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine. As you become more comfortable with these changes, you can gradually increase the difficulty level.

  2. Set specific, measurable goals: Having clear and specific goals makes it easier to track your progress and stay motivated. Make sure your goals are measurable so you can see how far you've come.

  3. Make a plan: Having a plan in place will make it easier to stick to your new habits. Write down the steps you need to take to achieve your goals, and be sure to include a timeline for when you want to achieve them.

  4. Get support: Change is always easier with the support of others. Whether it's a friend, family member, or a professional, having someone to talk to and share your progress with can help keep you accountable and motivated.

  5. Be patient with yourself: Change takes time and it's important to be patient and kind to yourself. Don't get discouraged if you slip up or have a setback. Instead, use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

  6. Celebrate progress: Recognize and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. This will help you to stay motivated and remind you that you're on the right track.

  7. Reflect and reassess: Reflect on the progress you've made and reassess your goals regularly. Use what you've learned to make adjustments and keep moving forward.

Remember why you started. Whenever you're feeling discouraged or unsure, remind yourself of why you started this journey in the first place. Visualize the person you want to become and the life you want to live, and use that as motivation to keep going. Change is a process, not an event. It's important to be consistent and persistent in your efforts. And don't be too hard on yourself, progress takes time and effort. Be patient and kind to yourself, and always keep in mind why you started this change.
