Not Changing Who You Are, Changing Who You Think You Are.

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

What you repeatedly do, you become.

Practice who you want to be.

It got me thinking...

We all have a vision of the kind of person we want to be - confident, kind, successful, the list goes on. But the truth is, we don't become that person overnight. It takes time, effort, and practice to become the person we aspire to be. Many of us have heard the age-old adage, "practice makes perfect." But what if I told you that practice is more than just a tool to perfect a skill or habit? In fact, practice can be the key to shaping who you want to be and ultimately, whether you will just survive or thrive in life. Practice who you want to be, and not just once in a while, but every single day. Because the more you practice, the more it becomes a part of who you are. And before you know it, you'll look in the mirror and see the person you've always wanted to be staring back at you.

Let's take a closer look at what it means to practice who you want to be, and how it can impact your life. What does it mean to practice who you want to be?

To practice who you want to be means intentionally cultivating the traits, values, and habits that you desire to embody in your life. It's about setting an intention to live in a way that aligns with your personal values and goals, and then actively pursuing that vision through consistent practice and action. For example, if you want to be a more compassionate and empathetic person, you might practice active listening and seeking to understand others' perspectives. If you want to be a more disciplined person, you might practice setting and achieving small goals each day. The idea is to intentionally practice the behaviours and attitudes that reflect who you want to be, so that they become second nature over time.

Practicing who you want to be can also impact whether you simply survive or thrive in life. When we're just surviving, we're often in a reactive state, just trying to get through each day and meet our basic needs. On the other hand, when we're thriving, we're intentionally creating a life that aligns with our values, goals, and aspirations.

By practicing who you want to be, you can shift from a survival mindset to a thriving mindset. You can begin to set goals, make intentional choices, and take action to create the life you desire. When you're thriving, you're not just going through the motions, but instead, living a life that feels fulfilling, purposeful, and meaningful.

How to practice who you want to be

So, how can you start practicing who you want to be? Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Define who you want to be: Start by clarifying your values, goals, and aspirations. What kind of person do you want to be? What kind of life do you want to create?

  2. Identify key habits and behaviours: Once you've identified who you want to be, think about the key habits and behaviours that align with that vision. For example, if you want to be a more grateful person, you might practice gratitude journaling each day.

  3. Start small: Rather than trying to change everything at once, start by focusing on one or two key habits or behaviours. Make a commitment to practice them consistently each day.

  4. Be accountable: Find ways to hold yourself accountable to your practice. This could include sharing your goals with a friend or family member, tracking your progress in a journal, or using an app or tool to help you stay on track.

  5. Be patient: Remember that change takes time. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results right away. Keep practicing, and trust that over time, your efforts will pay off.

Practicing who you want to be can be a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation. By intentionally cultivating the traits, values, and habits that align with your vision for yourself, you can shift from simply surviving to thriving in life. So take some time to define who you want to be, identify key habits and behaviours, and start practicing today. Your future self will thank you for it.
