Starve Your Distractions, Feed Your Focus

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

It is better to go narrow and deep

Than wide and shallow.

It got me thinking...

When it comes to personal growth and success, going narrow and deep is the way to go. Let's face it: we all have limited time and energy. If we try to do too many things at once, we end up spreading ourselves too thin. This is why it's important to focus on one thing at a time, and give it our full attention. By doing so, we can achieve a greater level of mastery and satisfaction.

When we spread ourselves too thin, we may not be able to devote enough time, attention, or resources to any one thing to make meaningful progress. On the other hand, when we focus our efforts on a few key areas, we can develop a deeper understanding and expertise in those areas, leading to greater impact and success.

For example, in a professional context, someone who specializes in a particular field or skillset may be more sought after and valued than someone who has a superficial understanding of many things. In a personal context, having a few close relationships that we invest time and energy into may be more fulfilling and meaningful than having many casual acquaintances.

We live in a world that is full of distractions. From social media to email notifications, it's easy to get sidetracked from what really matters. But why is it so hard to stay focused? Well, for starters, distractions are often more tempting than the work we need to do. They provide an immediate sense of pleasure and satisfaction, whereas the work we need to do often requires delayed gratification. Going narrow and deep can help us avoid feeling overwhelmed and stressed. When we have too many things on our plate, we may struggle to manage our time and prioritize effectively. By focusing on a few key areas, we can simplify our lives and reduce stress.

This is where the psychology of motivation comes in. If we want to stay focused, we need to tap into our intrinsic motivation. This means finding meaning and purpose in the work we do, and using that as our driving force.

One way to do this is to set clear goals for ourselves. When we have a specific objective in mind, we are more likely to stay focused and motivated. It's also important to break down our goals into smaller, more manageable tasks. This way, we can track our progress and feel a sense of accomplishment along the way.

Another key to staying focused is to eliminate distractions as much as possible. This means turning off notifications on our phones, logging out of social media accounts, and creating a distraction-free work environment. By doing so, we can train our brains to stay focused for longer periods of time.

Overall, while it can be tempting to try to do everything and be everything to everyone, focusing on a few key areas and going narrow and deep can lead to greater fulfillment, success, and peace of mind.
