You Can't Love Anyone Until You Love Yourself

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

You can't pour from an empty cup.

I can't help but wonder...

"You take care of me and I'll take care of you"? It's an old expression that has been around for ages, but is it still applicable today?

We should revisit and change this expression to "I'll take care of me for you, if you will please take care of you for me." It may sound selfish at first, but hear me out.

When we love someone, we want to take care of them and make them happy. But how can we do that if we're not taking care of ourselves first? We need to prioritize our own well-being so that we can be our best selves for our loved ones.

At the same time, we can't control other people's actions or feelings. We can't force someone to take care of themselves, but we can set an example by taking care of ourselves and encouraging them to do the same.

It's like being on a plane during an emergency. The flight attendants always tell you to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. It's not selfish - it's necessary. You can't help others if you're suffocating.

Self-care is an essential component of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked or dismissed as a selfish or indulgent practice. However, taking care of ourselves is actually one of the most important things we can do not only for ourselves but also for those around us. "I'll take care of me for you, if you will please take care of you for me" highlights the importance of self-care in relationships, and the reciprocal nature of caring for ourselves and for others.

When we prioritize our own self-care, we are better able to show up for others in a meaningful way. We are more patient, compassionate, and understanding, and we are able to offer support and care from a place of strength and stability. This can be especially important in our closest relationships, where we may need to provide support and care for others on a regular basis.

However, caring for ourselves is not just important for the sake of others. It is also important for our own personal growth and development. When we prioritize our own well-being, we are able to cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance, which can help us to navigate life's challenges with greater ease and resilience. We are also able to develop a greater sense of purpose and meaning in our lives, which can help us to find greater fulfillment and satisfaction.

Of course, it can be difficult to prioritize self-care in a culture that often values productivity and achievement over rest and relaxation. However, it is important to remember that self-care is not a luxury or a indulgence, but a necessity for overall well-being. By taking care of ourselves, we are better able to show up for others, and we are also able to cultivate a greater sense of self-worth and self-love.

So, embrace honouring yourself; fill yourself up and keep your cup full.
